Nearly 25,000 Lost Power in Queensland and Victoria Following Powerful Storms

Around twenty-five thousand households in south-east Queensland were left without power on Monday morning after intense storm systems passed over the area, generating wind gusts hitting 109km/h.

Substantial Ice Stones and Extensive Damage

Locals witnessed substantial frozen pellets as large as 7 centimeters in certain regions. Weather authorities confirmed that various areas across Queensland had been affected by substantial ice precipitation.

Emergency crews were working to restore energy supply throughout the damaged zones, with nearly 70 crews working to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Climate Difficulties

Simultaneously, approximately 1,000 residents in the southern state also experienced energy failures after Melbourne saw its wettest day in over 500 days.

Rescue organizations responded to 598 emergency reports across the region, mainly for property damage but also for fallen timber and flooding.

  • Hoppers Crossing area - various rescue reports
  • Wyndham - over 175 calls for assistance

During the peak on Sunday, more than 28,000 power users in Victoria were experiencing outages.

Meteorological Predictions

Moist weather were forecast to persist along much of Queensland's east this coming days as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

The following day was forecast to be the heaviest precipitation period, with persistent storm activity expected across various areas of both areas.

Medical Alert

Public health experts alerted that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, especially given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This warning comes after previous incidents where analogous circumstances led to major medical consequences in the state.
